We took a run for the hills today and landed in Coleman, TX for the night. We went through Leakey, Brady and Coleman. Home tomorrow and hopefully it will be as beautiful a day at it was today.
Some random comments from the day :
*I’m glad those turkeys kept going instead of changing their minds like they usually do.
*Was that a fox or coyote? (pretty sure it was a coyote)
*What kind of mother %#$&ing convoy is this!
*I think that was my turn!
*Incoherent babbling as Bryan passed a slow care but there were rubber rivets between the stripes in the road.
*Well it’s a Gabbert ride now, we’re in the projects!
And the piรจce de resistance so far…Aren’t you proud of me? I didn’t pass them ๐
Had to fix my headset that broke! #redneckengineering
….if we didn’t come into some kind of construction!
Seriously, we had 2 1/2 hours to go until home and lo and behold boom! A mobile stop light for a 2 lane road to become a 1 lane road!
Of course it was still w-i-n-d-y and overcast but it was a little warmer.
It was a great 4 1/2 days on the bike, it was good us time, relaxing and unwinding. We had some good food and stayed in some neat places too. We always look for the local and Mom & Pop places.
Now we’re home and already planning our next ride.
We started in South Texas, made our way into West Texas, then looped around and across North Texas and made our way down through East Texas to historic Gonzales, Texas for one last night on the road.
Texas has been s-u-p-e-r windy! We’ve got mad respect for those guys that do the Hoka Hey Challenge! We’ve been whipped by the wind and decided to call it each day when we could have probably gone a little further but these guys go and go and go! They pull over when they get tired to sleep a short time in parking lots only to wake up with a pack of stray dogs snuggled up to them….true story from someone we know!
We’ve had our fair share of bad weather over the years that we’ve ridden in – extreme temps, both hot and cold; pouring rain that we could barely see in; straight line winds for hours and of course the perfect days which by far surpass the other days. I don’t call them bad days because any day we get to ride is a good day.
Random things we said today: Ooo that was a good one (wind gust), I need to fix my jacket, do we need gas, lots of colorful language when a big ol’ semi pulls out on the highway chug chug chugging to get up to speed barely ahead of us although my favorite was you cumquat mother f$&%er, was that our turn, and Bryan’s favorite set to me having a hissy fit….dang it, my ear plugs!
We love to ride and haven’t done it enough recently, it’s time we get back to it…of course that is in between the bathroom remodel, work, lake house remodel, work, family time, and work.
Until next time, smell ya later road side smells and winds it’s time to chill, I would like to use my new selfie stick on the bike for some good ride videos.
And we are making our way home! Almost, kind of, sort of. We went from Cleburne to Sulphur Springs today and the wind whipped us the whole way.
Bryan also made it a true Gabbert trip by taking us through some uber sketchy places! For those that don’t know about our true Gabbert rides, let me tell you, it means that we went into sketchy areas or roads. Today, I’m pretty sure we passed Cabrini Green, don’t say his name…especially not three times in a row! Then after dinner we took what I’m pretty sure was a service drive for businesses!
Our day started off quite chilly and breezy. West Texas quickly reminded us how WINDY it is!
It wasn’t ride to Albuquerque March 2017 windy but it was windy enough to wear us out!
Made some stops along our way from Pecos to Cleburne, TX. We were able to see some historical places and some really neat murals. I just love old small towns!
Finally some time to ride ! We started off with a good breakfast.
Then headed West, where the West Texas scenery never lets us down. Stopped for a good lunch and found what could be one of our spirit animals while there. We visited a few cool historical places and continued on to our destination for the night.
Weather was fabulous! Cold and chilly most of the day but still sunshine enough to give us a little sunburned nose.
Paddle faster ….We’ve stayed in some interesting places but these mirrors have us laughing so hard!
…to start riding! We have been landlocked with home renovations, weather, work and being just plain lazy, aka exhausted! This past year and beginning of this year has been in the dumper!
The weather is becoming nicer for riding here in S. Texas and that means we ride more. It does not, however, mean we stop having what we call our “Gabbert” rides.
This morning we slept in and were sitting on the couch and it was kind of “hey let’s go for a ride” between us. So off we went, still early enough to have a nice breakfast/brunch somewhere. We headed for The Roux in Sandia/Lagarto. The owners are Louisiana transplants and make some very delicious food! Plates are plentiful and prices are worth it! You can also place orders for boudin ๐
So we have a nice ride there, enjoy a good breakfast and turn right out of the parking lot when we leave…..and it begins. Nice road with a slight curve, crest a small hill and come down the other side with a sight we’re not sure is right. But oh alas, it is….the road ends and goes into the lake!
Welcome to our Gabbert ride! If the road doesn’t end, isn’t sketchy as all get out that I have to get off so Bryan can turn the bike around, turn to 3 inch deep loose caliche, 10 miles of caliche or grooved pavement, have construction on it, take us on such a pothole laden road that we’re doing the slalom or take us where the hills have eyes – it’s not a Gabbert ride.
I wouldn’t trade our rides for anything, don’t get me wrong, I would still have plenty to blog about but these you just can’t beat. These rides are some of what makes us laugh and usually makes me either choke on whatever I’m eating or drinking ๐คช๐ฅด
We have not been riding due to Covid-19 and just being plain busy as well. We missed it! This weekend had us out by ourselves one day and with friends the next…it was just what we needed and look forward to many more, especially with some nice weather arriving. ๐๐ปโค๏ธ๐ช๐ป
